A Hotel For Ramblers?

I have seen a number of newspaper articles describing how the Youth Hostel Association is repositioning itself to provide more comfortable and flexible accommodation (e.g. “Farewell to Dorms and Flat Tizer” by Adam Edwards in the Daily Telegraph, 3/2/06).

The YHA’s mission statement “We exist to help all, especially young people of limited means, to travel and discover England and Wales by providing cheap, safe and secure Youth Hostels in superb coastal, countryside and city locations” is still very much in line with the ideals of early ramblers like Tolkien who sought to enjoy the countryside and walking with friends.

If there is still a market to provide facilities for such holidaymakers as the YHA believes and there are people who would like to follow in Tolkien’s footsteps to experience the joys of an English shire, then there may be a market for a hotel like the Three Cups in Lyme Regis. This seems more likely as the YHA are cutting back on their locations and there is no hostel between Beer and Litton Cheney on the Dorset coast anyway.
