Destruction and Distraction

Wednesday looks like a good day to bury bad news in Lyme Regis such as Palmers' plans to destroy The Three Cups HOTEL. Click here to see today's edition of View From Lyme Regis.

If you are going to announce the destruction of the most important cultural asset in Lyme Regis and you don't want to cause a fuss, then Wednesday is the best day to do it because it will not appear in the local newspaper until a week later. Then if you can give the front page over to infighting on the town council, the story can be relegated to page 5. And if you can ignore the fact that the main aim of the campaign to save The Three Cups was to re-open the building as a HOTEL, then you may have sealed the fate of what was once the jewel of the tourism industry in the Lyme Regis area.

As far as I can see, Palmer's plans are for a retained facade project. Apart from a few features, Palmers want to demolish the interior of the historic building where so many famous artists stayed and have no intention of providing another much needed hotel for Lyme Regis.

Palmers are getting away with cultural vandalism, destruction of international heritage and cheating the people of Lyme Regis of a better future. Local Government is supposed to protect us from such behaviour by greedy commercial organisations. What went wrong?

Presumably, there will be opportunities to object to the planning proposals. I would urge anyone who reads this in the area to make their objections known to West Dorset Council and Lyme Regis Town Council.
